"In fact, Wall Street's outlook is so bleak for the company that if it just misses its numbers marginally, that would be a relief to many."

Obviously the stock is extremely weak and vulnerable to selling. It seems to me that the bleak outlook is being overdone. Wall street brokerage firms are issuing earnings warnings themselves, who are they to get so sanctimonius. It appears to me that the outlook has become so dire, that some are subtly calling into question the entire business model of the company: "That [earnings miss] risk, coupled with what many analysts see as a deteriorating market for the company, has led many analysts to become incredibly glum on the company."

That sentence makes it sound like the rest of the economy is humming along just fine, but there is trouble in Ariba-land.

Well, time will tell. IMO, if Ariba is still winning international clients like Bristol Myers-Squibb, then the company has a very good product line and a bright future, as long as mgmt doesn't muck things up.

Here's how bad the outlook is on Ariba: You have this financial journalist Joe Bousquin e-mailing the CEO of Ariba to ask him if he's going to be fired (albeit dolled up with the pseudo-polite "status" question): "An Ariba spokeswoman declined to comment for this story, and Krach did not respond to a direct email asking about his status with the company."

Now that is a bleak outlook indeed.
