Dear Steve: I dont want to get into an arguement about taxes my position was, is and always will be we pay too damn much in taxes and the more you give them the more they will spend. Unfortunately, I have had some direct involvement in reviewing Govt. spending in my career (I was on a MiniGrace Commission for 3 years) and I know the INCREDIBLE WASTE that goes on. Trust me, when I tell you that if you were to take the politics out of Govt. and operate efficiently you could REDUCE expenditures by 25% minimum and provide MORE services to the people. Now, that is a statement you can believe or not but lets not argue it as it will get us nowhere.
I would HOWEVER like to say something about Privatization of SS and I think it ON POINT for the stock market in general.
First, let me say I feel I am totally unbiased on this subject because I am 57 years old and its TOO LATE for me to be involved in that program if it happens. However, if I were say 45 or younger I think that I would be EXCITED as all get out over it. Just think, a portion of your SS would BELONG to you. I think all of us on S.I. would agree that a diversified portfolio of quality stocks over 10-15-20-25-30 years would yield AN INCREDIBLY better return than the estimated lousy 1% yield someone such as myself will likely receive (and thats only if I live) and to be able to pass it on to Heirs is a wonderful way to begin to build up on a MASS SCALE BASIS wealth for a nation. I am very bullish on Privatization. I think the Govt could easily set ground rules such as some of the larger stock index funds so that people couldnt make crazy investments or even some of the investment grade bond funds to be sure that given a long period of time the peoples retirement would be as safe as America and really when you think about it even our Govt. is only safe if we are healthy economically. Yeah, they can run the printing presses but if it isnt backed up just would result in worthless paper. John
