WILLOW BAY, CNN ANCHOR:
Investors close the books on a washout quarter...

... tonight's "MONEYLINE Focus,"

corporate America has been sounding alarm bells on profits.

And this week, not a day went by without another profit warning.

According to First Call Thomson Financial,
S&P 500 earnings are expected to contract
both this quarter and next... adds that in
the technology sector things look even worse.

Joining us now, Chuck Hill, director of research for First Call.

... How bad is it?

... we're well on the way to setting a new record
for negative preannouncements.

... running 37 percent ahead of the record setting pace
in the fourth quarter...

... on the tech side of it, we're running 79 percent
above where we were in the record setting fourth quarter.

... things are really pretty dismal.

.. Walk us through, if you would...

... we've fallen off a cliff from...

... will certainly be negative rather than positive.

... Clearly a profits recession. What about in techs?

... Well, tech is even worse...

... they're still falling like a stone.

... that's an ominous sign when the analysts
are slashing numbers that far out.....

MYRON KANDEL, CNN FINANCIAL EDITOR:
Willow, it can't be much worse.

BAY: That's for sure.....

That is MONEYLINE for this Friday.
I'm Willow Bay. Good night from New York.....
