I am very disappointed they are even considering drilling int the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Allowing them to drill here would necessitate changing the name to something like Arctic National Wildlife Park, since refuge means

ref·uge (rĕf'yûj)
n.
Protection or shelter, as from danger or hardship.
A place providing protection or shelter.
A source of help, relief, or comfort in times of trouble.

there should be draconian penalties for the oil companies, agreed upon up front, if they do another Exxon Valdez

I can easily see Big Oil getting out of any stiff penalties bc of their clout on the Hill. Good idea, but the damage would already be done, and any draconian punishment would be very difficult, if not impossible, to mete out IMO.

They should be looking at conservation efforts(ie alternatives to 10 MPG SUV's!!), pursuing alternative energy sources, and giving huge tax breaks/credits for breakthroughs in superconductivity. And there really should be ways of dissuading people from using SUV's for transport to and from work anyway. This is wholly irresponsible unless ones business lies off of a dirt track.

BTW, there is talk that Dean Kamen's "Ginger" a.k.a. IT is a prototype of a Stirling engine design, a very efficient gas powered engine. I have nothing against the people working for Exxon, but I would love to see Kamen put them all out of business.
