The U.S./Western Europe alliance became irrelevant when the wall came down? It may be more relevant than ever.

If you follow the idea that Western Europe lost the common foe that unified it, you have to wonder what will unify it in the future.

The Euros are rushing to "unite" for one reason.....money. This kind of unity works well in the boardrooms of multi-nationals and among governing elites. It doesn't have too good a track record at ground level.

NATO worked for many reasons, chief among them, in my view, was the fact that it had a "first among equals" -- the U.S.

Squabbling (which can lead to conflict) among European members was minimal. Who will be "first among equals" in the anti-NATO? Will there be unanimous agreement on this and, if not, what will be the fate of pesky dissenters?

As much as NATO defended Europe from the Soviets, NATO defended Europe from itself. Will be interesting (but not pretty) to see what happens when the ultimate "peace-keeping" force folds its tent.
