>> What % of the disc drive pc market do these two companies have?

About 50%. The drive market is approx 150 million units per yr. WDC sells approx 20 m, mxtr/qntm about 55m. Seagate (which is private) sells approx 35 m. The rest is sold by IBM, Fugitsu and Hitachi. But their markets are specialized away from the desktop drives. Such as notebooks.

Yes there are. I like auto parts and construction/mining machinery. There have been plant closings and layoffs all over the industrial sector. So it means the companies are facing their problem and the survivors will be in better shape when the economy turns up.

I my opinion the most important statistic now is the level of employment and earnings. I wonder if there is still enough demand for technical workers to absorb all the layoffs from dotcoms and telecom companies ?
