perhaps "I give up" is the definitive statement. i can certainly live with that. it's not my cd-rom drive. and sometimes computer probs just get to be too much, and troubleshooting them is more of a hassle than it's worth. i sure understand that. i merely responded to your request for help... "just realized my CD-ROM not working. Can't open CD. Any idea?".

perhaps you could tell us where on the flowchart ( fixwindows.com ) you reached an impasse? the chart looks to be a useful tool to me, and to some others on the thread. but maybe it's too general, or not comprehensive enough. if you used the flowchart at all, could you provide some feedback?

cd-rom drives are cheap and not built to last. as soon as mine messed up, i yanked it and installed a cheapie for twenty bucks. i figured that if i was wrong in my diagnosis and the problem was something other than a tired, 3-year old drive, it would have only cost me a few bucks to find that out.
