Although I believe this article makes a good case for the 'media is liberal' argument, you surely don't mean to imply that child molesters are predominently liberal, or that liberals condone this behavior? As a 'liberal' and a father, I am outraged at any incident where a child is harmed. As a 'centrist', I am in favor of the death penalty, specifically for this type of heinous crime.
However, it does make a point about the media and how it determines what 'we' think is important to see. I happen to be an advocate of nuclear power (as long as you don't build on any fault lines :), and I remember years ago when there were many articles about potential 'leaks' and problems at plants. These articles were usually on the front page. Then, in the back pages, it seemed like every other day there was an article about a train crash, with people hurt and killed. How did the media decide that the 'potential' accidents of nuclear power plants were more 'newsworthy' than real accidents in our railway system that were killing real people?
I think it has gotten worse. Many cable news channels are now engaging in 'entertainment' news. They grab onto some hot topic, and invite really obnoxious loudmouths from both sides, and inflame the audience. You are outraged, but you're hooked. This type of 'media' is on the same level as Jerry Springer and his ilk; indeed, Jerry is higher because he admits that his genre is trash...
Wow, I really got off the subject. Sorry to meander. |
