In practice people have no choice. The anti-trust case against MSFT was founded on some genuinely nasty stuff they did, and this is typical. I think it would be a great pity if the anti-MSFT verdict is thrown out or emasculated.

Check out the unpleasant new plan for Windows XP (the follow-on to Win98, due later this year). They are planning to require "activation", which means the software will come with a single-usage license key. The license key will have to be activated over the net, and it will only work on the one motherboard it is installed on. There is no plan right now to allow de-activation. This means that every time you buy a new PC, you cannot just transfer your old copy of WinXP... you have to buy a new one.

This is like buying a new video card and having it automatically and irreversibly weld itself into the slot on the PC.
