May 2, 1997 (Seoul) -- Hyundai Electronics Co., Ltd. has formed a strategic alliance with Kasan Electronics Co., Ltd. to market Kasan's PC boards overseas.

Kasan will install Hyundai Electronics' MPEG-2 decoder single chips in its digital video disc (DVD) boards for PCs and make use of Hyundai's worldwide semiconductor distribution channels to export DVD boards.

Kasan is a multimedia equipment manufacturing company established in 1990.

The company produces primarily multimedia boards for PCs, satellite broadcast receivers, high-functional modems and integrated services digital network (ISDN) modems.

In 1990, Kasan had sales of US$560,000, and increased that figure to nearly $45 million in 1996.

Kasan expects to have more than $113 million in sales in 1997.

Through the alliance, Hyundai Electronics has found a stable provider of MPEG-2 chips, while Kasan has acquired worldwide marketing routes that are usually hard for small- or medium-sized companies to find.

Hyundai is expected to form another strategic partnership with Doo In Electronics, also a multimedia manufacturer.

Market experts expect the number of strategic alliances between large companies and smaller companies to expand in Korea.
