Interesting item from Coin World - "The failure of the Y2K disaster to materialize leaves the US Mint with an unsold inventory of about 300,000 ounces of 2000-dated American Eagles" Looks like they minted 562,000 ounces and only sold 164,500 which requires them to melt them and reuse them for other coin programs.
