Teresa, great answer but would like ta add that some of those programs are tuned or tune themselves to changes to market swings or trends. One of my friends at an very substantial hedge fund does just that. He is always short and long around 600 or so stocks, and various stocks are added or eliminated from time to time. It is also easy to see it on NASDAQ trading wen continuous small trades of 100 shares are traded without change in price those trades are mostly computerized trades and not always the small investor.
