Kevin,

Unfortunately, a person needing hospitalization needs to get mean, or have someone with them that gets mean. Otherwise, the nurses will try to shove you off in a corner and ignore you as long as possible. Some of those nurses are on an ego trip so large, they are in outer space. I have also found it necessary to remind some doctors that the only "orders" they can give are to those whose paychecks they are responsible for. It is true that they can make suggestions that a patient would be a fool not to follow, but I get sick and tired of this "Doctor's orders" crap. They don't like it when they are forced to explain everything in layman's language either, but a patient can insist on it, and go clear up to the hospital administrator if necessary.
