Re: Ocular Infections

This comes from MBI's website!

What causes serious eye infections?
Eye infections such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, corneal ulcers and blepharitis can be caused by a variety of
pathogenic bacteria, fungi or viruses. Many of these pathogens are developing resistance to the antimicrobial drugs
currently used to treat them.

What treatments are currently available?
There are various antibiotic treatments available, although ophthalmologists are now aware that antibiotic
resistance is a significant concern. The world ophthalmic antibiotic market generates annual revenues of US $1.2
billion and is growing at a rate of approximately 10% per year.

What is the status of our program to develop drugs to treat eye infections?
We have been investigating the application of our cationic antimicrobial peptide technology in treating diseases of
the eye. Our libraries of peptide compounds are being screened in vitro for their activity against a panel of more
than 250 clinical isolates made up of 13 of the most common and important bacterial and fungal eye pathogens
associated with such indications. Peptides exhibiting broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and rapid killing of these pathogens have been identified. We are continuing our preclinical investigation of selected peptides.

Also heard the eye drug's development is "on schedule," for whatever that means. This also would be a billion dollar market I'm sure.
