'"...If a system were in place and working, and the owner went bankrupt, then the new owner might have an
economically competitive system..."

Maybe that'll happen with GSTRF, to Q's benefit... '

Maybe, but GSTRF is now under more pressure because Iridium has already gone through bankruptcy. The new owners have a very sophisticated system that they paid little for. GSTRF must now compete with the new Iridium. If Iridium is anywhere near satisfactory in voice quality (it's debated), then GSTRF would not have had hope of competing while paying off its bondholders. Yes, I know it was unable to pay them when it had no competition.

It seems to me from Irwin Jacobs' remarks wrt Globalstar that he is far more interested in using Globalstar as a conduit for aviation data than for voice. I also noticed Garmin is one of Q's collaborators. They are the most successful firm in light-airplane avionics at the moment. One thing that puzzles me is that for most aviation applications speed is not so important that you have to use low earth orbiting satellites. A second's delay isn't a big deal if you're getting aviation weather. Or even that crucial for air traffic control, we'd be in big trouble if a second mattered. In collision avoidance, one second could occasionally make the difference between a terrible fright and disaster, but even here, a low earth orbit doesn't seem a necessity. But I digress.
