Tim,

The distance from earth to mars is more than the distance from venus to earth. Yet the temperature delta is 1-1/2 orders of magnitude greater.

Clearly, proximity to the sun does not account for much of the discrepancy.

Some of the moons of Saturn have a climate similar to earth, even thought they are 10X further away from the sun.
