I was exaggerating to make a point, to show how those in the middle feel being caught between the bickering ends. I'm sure the 'capitalists' will be just as outraged by my raping of the planet remark.

Nuclear energy in this country has a very good safety record, even with TMI, compared to other energy sources. With careful regulation, I believe it is possible to minimize the risks to a managable level (say, on par with the risks we have manage now with how many bizillion nukes).

Chernobyl is a different beast. I'm surprised with their crumbling infrastructure and economy that Russia hasn't blown up half of their country.

An interesting side story on Chernobyl. I worked with a woman whose parents left Russia to move to Israel, and she ended up here. Her grandparents were still back in Kiev. When she heard the news about Chernobyl, they called her grandparents to tell them to get out, explaining what we were all seeing on the news. Her grandparents did not believe them, accusing them of spreading western lies. Don't know if they really thought that, or if they might have thought the phone was being tapped. Don't know what ended up happening to them long term....
