Maryland Public Television to Store Master Control Video Library On Ampex Data Systems' DST Archive System
BUSINESS WIRE - April 02, 2001 09:02
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Apr 2, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Ampex Data Systems Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Ampex Corp. (AMEX:AXC), today announced that Maryland Public Television (MPT) has selected the Ampex DST 712 video server archive for its new digital master control center.

According to Kirby Storms, MPT project manager for digital conversion, MPT selected the DST 712 archive as a core component of their new automated server-based multi-channel Digital Master Control. "As part of the migration to digital technology and the need to preserve our library of 6,000+ analog tapes, we chose the Ampex DST 712 because of its speed and reliability. We will use the DST 712 video server archive to store our entire master control library, including long-format programs, spots and interstitial material," Storms said.

The two-cabinet 10.5 terabyte DST library will be interfaced to two Pinnacle MediaStream video servers via Pinnacle's Connect Plus archive architecture. The two servers support 10 channels of input for recording and 10 output channels for playout. Avalon's archive management software will control the DST archive by taking commands from Harris Automation Solution's Louth automation software for storing and retrieving programming to and from the archive.

"MPT needed to implement a fully automated play-to-air system that demanded an expandable, high-performance video server archive system with proven reliability," explained John Hennessy, Ampex Data Systems' director of video and broadcast marketing. "We were very confident that they would select us as their archive of choice since we have many similar installations at public television stations and networks across the country. Our product line is very compatible with the direction that public television is taking for its technological infrastructure."

Based in Owings Mills, Md., Maryland Public Television is an agency of the State of Maryland that exists to provide informational, educational and cultural programming statewide to the citizens of Maryland. MPT is a public television station, bringing the best that television has to offer, including 40 hours per week of the best children's programming on television. MPT is also a producer of programs about Maryland and the region, and specials on arts and culture and news and public affairs. And MPT is one of the top producers of nationally distributed programs for the public broadcasting system.

Ampex DST automated cartridge libraries are high-performance, reliable digital archives with unlimited expansion capabilities to accommodate a facility's growing video storage requirements. The DST library reduces the overall time required to archive and restore program elements to a network of video servers. For the large number of broadcast and video houses currently using video servers, Ampex offers a bundled solution specifically designed for the broadcasting environment that meets all requirements for a compatible near-line archive to achieve complete automation.
