Chartered to Operate 300mm Fab in Mid-2002

Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing, Ltd plans to operate its first 300mm wafer process manufacturing facility by the middle of 2002. Previously the company had no plans for such a facility; it was believed that a larger volume of chips, such as DRAM or flash memory, would be needed. Recent strong demand for broadband and wireless applications, however, has persuaded the company to think otherwise.

The company's advanced 300mm Fab 7 is expected to cost a total of US$3.5 billion. Monthly capacity will reach 30,000 wafers at full-scale production. The process technology will be 0.13micron to 0.1micron, and the cleanroom will measure 170,000 square feet.
