One of the factors working in EMC's favor is its diversification. I recall Ruettgers saying last year that no single market segment accounts for more than 10% of EMC's total revenue. That's very good news since although some segments of the market may be soft (e.g., telecom spending) other segments (e.g., medical imaging) remain very robust. This is the same sort of diversification of revenue sources that companies like GE enjoy. While EMC's rate of growth may be tempered somewhat by an overall economic slowdown, they are not vulnerable to the sort of revenue collapse that others who were overly dependent on telecom or dotcom spending are seeing. Everybody needs storage, and more of it each year. This is very much non-discretionary spending since information is generated in increasing amounts as a byproduct of business operation for just about everyone.
