Rajala makes a valid point. Carriers are looking to reduce handset and subsidy cost any way possible.
Just $1.00 in handset cost is significant. Multi mode chips and handsets introduce additional cost. Economies of scale need to be their for manufacturers to consider multi mode (WCDMA CDMA 2000). The complexity of developing such a handset is greater we incorrectly assume you just plug in a magic chip. IMO the international roaming is very niche less than 1% hard to justify the development of multi mode WCDMA CDMA 2000 handsets. Their might be an exception in the case of UNICOM with a GSM/ IS95/Ix chip /handset. Today carriers are still selling dual modes because cost is few bucks less than tri modes. Will they have a mass market for multi mode?
