Simple: BOTH. Maybe Ford didn't wake you to that fact this past year??

Batteries aren't *nearly* as dangerous as radioactive waste. Radioactive waste from nuclear power plants will be radioactive for hundreds of thousands of years. Regardless, what batteries are needed when you have wind and solar energy feeding into a utility grid, which can then be backed up by other power plants, hopefully fuel cell powered?? Run your solar & wind during the day, then fuel cells and wind at night. Use ocean wave power technology, and keep investing in alternative energy R&D. There are *tons* of natural energy sources all around us which can be controlled and utilized just as easily as conventional energy sources.

I know I can find a few places with the proper geology to safely build a nuclear plant even in the event of a 10-12 earthquake and a few places to store the tens of cubic yards of nasty waste.

I see... and what do you propose to do w/ existing nuclear power plants which aren't so safe? How do you propose to *move* the nuclear waste from point A to point B?? There is simply no place on earth that a 9 earthquake would not completely devastate a nuclear power plant. Add to that tornadoes, terrorism, plane crashes, etc... well, you're in a losing situation. You must be one of those engineers who believes that he can conquer and control nature, but unfortunately your ego is missing the serious risk involved w/ nuclear waste.
