When I cut and paste, some of the charts lost some formatting, and could be confusing. I'll try to reillustrate here:
Handgun 1992 Handgun Percent Overall Murder Handgun Murder Country Murders Pop Rate Ownership Rate (per 100k) (per 100K) ----------------------------------------------------------- United States 13,429 254m 5.28 29% 8.4 Switzerland 97 6m 1.42 14% 2.25 Canada 128 27m 0.47 5% 5.45 Sweden 36 8.7m 0.42 <1% 1.73 Australia 13 18mm 0.07 2% 4.48 United Kingdom 33 57.8m 0.06 1% 1.97 Japan 60 124m 0.05 <1% 1.20
EDITORS NOTE - WHEN I EDIT THIS IN THE REPLY EDIT MODE, IT LINES UP. WHEN I GO TO POST IT, IT UNFORMATS IT AGAIN. SORRY.
Though not straight line, the numbers show a definite correlation between handgun ownership and murder rates. In Japan, there were 60 murders; in the US, 13,429 (223x) The handgun rate for Japan did not show up on the charts; I put <1%, how close to zero is anyone's guess.
On the other, I'm not sure what your issue with the motives are? Also, I can't see where you are talking about the 'missing 40%'; is it this chart?:
Circumstances 1993 --------------------- Argument 30.8% Unknown 27.7 Other Motives 21.7 Felonies 19.1 |
