Beijing Electronics plans 8-inch fab after starting work on new 6-inch plant

BEIJING -- A new chip maker in China, called Beijing Electrontics Holdings Co. Ltd. here, has started construction of a 6-inch wafer fab and with plans to build an 8-inch plant as well, according to Chinese government officials.
In December, Beijing Electronics broke ground on the 6-inch (150-mm) wafer fab for an initial 0.35-micron process technology, which is slated for production in 2002, said Feng Hai, deputy director of economics for the Beijing municipal government.
"A new 8-inch, 0.25-micron production line is also under way," said Feng, who was presenting at last week's Semicon China 2001 trade show in Beijing. The government official did not elaborate on the details about Beijing Electronics, but the company will reportedly go after the silicon foundry business.
But if this company makes good on its promises, it will represent the seventh major chip maker in China with an 8-inch wafer fab. At present, there are six chip makers in China that have or are building 8-inch fabs, including Grace, Huaxia, Motorola, Shanghai Hua-Hong NEC, SMIC, and Shougang NEC. |
