Hard to tell if your looking for a home wireless network with internet connection sharing allowing you to roam around home or if your looking for a laptop with cell modem that will allow you to maintain contact as long as you are within some coverage area. Haven't tried the latter but it would require more info as to national, regional, etc.
If the former let us know. I've had Proxim installed for over a year using a cordless gateway, cable modem, hub, Win2K Pro server, three laptops and two desktops. However, it was limited to 1.2 MBits/Sec. I just replaced it with a D-link 802.11B 11Mbits/sec with 3 DWL-650 PCMCIA laptop cards and the DWL 1000AP access point. (Moved the desktops and proxim stuff to my other house to try with DSL). I tried to get the equivalent Proxim units (since I was familar with the brand), but they were not available yet. Anyway, the D-Link stuff works great. Greater range than I had with the Proxim and auto rate adjust for for non-optimal locations. It's just like being at the cable modem server and much better at sharing files, applications, printers, etc. Plus I only spent about half as much as I did on my original Proxim installation. |
