Hi Sal,

<What kind of threat do you think DVD-RAM (assuming we get it in volume in early 1998) poses to Iomega and their franchise?>

I think DVD-RAM in volume is a little further down the road than early 1998, especially at reasonable prices. I think DVD-ROM is more likely to ship in volume by early or mid 1998. Eventually DVD-RAM will pose some competition to JAZ. It's my understanding, however, that access times for DVD will be nowhere close to JAZ. Therefore, people using JAZ as alternate/unlimitted hard drives will most likely not find DVD acceptable.

I don't think, however, that any of these higher capacity removable storage devices diminish in any way the appeal of ZIP. ZIP drives will ultimately be $99 or less and have a large installed base making them the defacto standard. In addition, notebook ZIPs are only about two months away which will further solidify ZIP as a standard. I can't wait to get a ZIP drive for my Tecra's selectbay. ZIP is the easiest and quickest way to transfer data between my desktop and notebook. I also use ZIP's to transfer data between work and home.

Undoubtedly, Iomega will continue to face strong competition from many fronts and they can't expect to rest on just ZIP and JAZ. Follow on products such N-hand and continued alliances with other manufacturers will be critical to continued future success. I don't think KE is just standing by and letting DVD-RAM or other potential threats go unnoticed.

I think IOM will be a very interesting company to watch over the next couple years.

BTW, how do you read the current market.....do the techs still have steam or do you think we are reaching a shorterm top? I found it amazing that the NASDAQ handled the INTC pre-announcement so well. I thought this was just the kind of news the market was waiting for to use an excuse for a major correction. Apparently, not. I finally sold my trading shares of USRX in the low 80's. Still have my core USRX shares, but I could't resist taking some profits and re-investing them into the brutalized disk drive stocks (WDC and APM in particular).
