Intel baits Via customers with cash lure

Rebates on mobos, Pentium 4s, old lamps for new

By Mike Magee , 3 April 2001

RELIABLE SOURCES at different customers who buy Intel kit say that the firm is
offering a raft of incentives to keep them from using Via chipsets and other mobos
than their own.

The move is antagonising formerly loyal Taiwanese mobo makers.

According to one source, who declined to be named, Intel is offering a $20 plus
rebate to firms who buy its own 810 or 815EP mainboards.

That incentive is being funded out of a marketing pool and is aimed at
undermining Via's market share. But, because it is also affecting other Taiwanese
mobo manufacturers, some of which are INTC loyalists, it is causing some
resentment as their own market share suffers.

And the Chipzilla Monster is also putting marketing money where its mouth is by
giving what another INTC customer described as "significant rebates" on Pentium
4s for original equipment manufacturers. (OEMs).

While this is all very fine and dandy for the OEMs, this move has antagonised
distributors and system integrators, who do not like this kind of treatment. Again,
they are being pushed into the welcoming arms of Intel rivals AMD and Via. µ
