The idea that human rights abuses are intolerable and that Bush should use the incident as PR to press his point is dangerous and wrong-headed.

The Chinese leadership is old. Nevertheless, it has done a magnificent job of opening up China from an economic standpoint. Freedom and rights will flow from increased trade, modernization and the ultimate takeover by the younger leaders. The US policy of wagging its finger at other nations is insulting and demeaning.

The idea that the US has the right to claim that it is pure as the driven snow and that it can therefore dictate behavior to sovereign nations is mystifying.
