<America is not divided in two. It is divided in three: a third (liberal), a third (middle) and a third (conservative). Bush is losing his touch with the middling third.

The middle third care about environment, more than ever. In just 10 weeks, the Bush environmental dossier has gotten to be a toxic political accumulation. I'm not talking about the merits of individual policies. I'm talking about the moral impressions on which Americans will cast their votes next time. A presidency develops like a Polaroid picture. The emerging picture of the Bush administration is ugly.>

Stribe, this is a good and timely article. All I can speak for is CA, AZ, VA and Kansas City (a pretty good cross-section) - which is where I have many family and friends.

I have friends who are liberal Republicans (in CA/AZ) and conservative Democrats (in KC/VA). Two of my best friends - who are very liberal Republicans have already admitted that voting for Bush might have been a mistake. But neither trusted Gore, either. My best buddy back in VA is a conservative Dem - and voted for Bush - he DEFINITELY regrets it. He is a marine biologist - and genuinely fears for the environment if Bush is allowed eight years.

I have a couple of friends who still support Bush, but you can tell they are starting to question things. Not just his lack of an environmental stance - but his inability, or lack of concern - to spin things in a positive light.
