Dotcoms dump like-new hardware April 02, 2001 12:00 AM ET by Michelle Rushlo
For sale: servers, storage, other tech equipment. Low mileage. Fully loaded. Like new. Must sell immediately.
Just a year ago, dotcom fever was fueling otherworldly growth and investment in all kinds of high-tech equipment. But with the death toll rising among dotcoms, it appears an increasing number of barely-out-of-the-box servers and storage units are hitting the market -- raising questions about how they might affect manufacturers.
"The market is flooded for sure. The price has come down significantly in the last couple of months," said Brian Temple, president of Grapevine, Texas-based M.I.S. Resource Group, a company that sells refurbished equipment from Hewlett-Packard (HWP), Sun Microsystems (SUNW), EMC (EMC) and Hitachi (HIT).
Deep discounts
As recently as a couple of weeks ago, Temple purchased equipment from three bankrupt dotcoms for 10 cents on the dollar. Much of the equipment was purchased between September and January, he said. |
