I believe a lot of crimes are committed by people who are drunk or have been drinking, but no stats to back that up (will look later). However, drinking kills in many other ways; disease, suicide, and drunken drivers. I believe the stats are now that 50% of fatal accidents involve alcohol.

What about so-called 'hard drugs'? Heroin? Crack? Legalize those? I think we would end up having an even higher crime rate, and our jails would be even more full. A certain percentage of people don't do drugs because they are afraid of getting caught. Remove that worry, and they would try, and probably end up as addicts. Do we really need more addicts?
