David -

One item that has bothered me with testing is that the first step in choosing a stock to purchase is the "scan". As an example the BBB scan to establish a list of candidates to run the "system" against looking for buy signals.

To honestly test a system with historical data, shouldn't we include the "scan" criteria in the buy formula? Otherwise we aren't being honest since the buy signal would never be caught for a stock not on the scan list.

This may be an over simplification. I understand the need to develop the system without the "scan" criteria ( they would just muddy the water in toying with the system parameters ) but we seem to be developing systems that are not being tested in the way they are going to be used .... and using them in a way that they were not tested.(?)
