It is unlikely that they re-designed their product just to save a few bucks. While it is possible to design a product that can use flash from different manufacturers, it takes extra board real estate and changes to the code. And even then, you might have reduced functionality. And even if all of this is pulled off you still might have to change the specifications of your final product (battery life might change). Switching high end flash is not like switching to a different manufacturer of EPROMs or SDRAM...
