That only works if your 401k has those options. Alot of them do not have those type of options. Most are strictly equity based mutual funds. Used to be on the company 401k committe and it takes months to make changes to the plan. This market is moving at such a rate that these comittees can not keep up with this. Not many of the present mechaniisms in place today can keep up wiht a long term sustained day after day fast moving downward market.

A one day bounce like we had in 1987 is easy, just hang onto what you've got, wait it out and it comes back. the one in 1990 was the same. But this market is still looking for that magic capitulation. Why wasn't yesterdays 2.5B shares that point? Are we still waiting for exactly 3.00000000B shares to trade on a major down day to declare it capitulation?

Why hasn't CNBC had Abbey Cohen on lately expounding that now is the time to go into higher levels of equities? She was dead wrong a month ago. Gave us enough of a rally that the FEd and others did a real head fake.
