Part of the problem is that 'liberals' get lumped into all the same category, as do 'conservatives'. Not many people know the shades of gray as you do. So, we assume that the 'other side' shares the most repugnant ideas held by whatever fraction of that 'lump'.

But I think the problem actually has little to do with these distinctions or even an ideology. I think that a small vocal subset of people are here to 'virtually kick the dog'. Maybe their real dog bites back; I don't know nor care. I try to have a reasonable discussion, because I believe that to learn you must consider OPPOSING ideas, not just constant rehashing of your current beliefs. Unfortunately, some of the posters here are just great candidates for the 'Ignore this person' feature.

I have actually come to understand a great deal about how gun advocates think, and their reasoning. I now consider them to be less 'right wing extremists' than I thought before. Also, I think regional differences have a lot to do with it. So, I consider the time mostly well spent.
