"I thought that most flash cards were previously NOR,"
Could be, I just use flash cards as black boxes. But even a NAND flash card will need a microcontroller, you really need to do wear balancing on NAND flash, usually with a flash file system of some sort. But that is not the relevant issue. A fair amount of NOR flash is used for booting various devices, Alcatel for example, is not using flash as mass storage,so NAND is likely not the direction they need to go.

The flash market is highly fragmented and diverse. There is no killer technology, and companies have found various niches. Now cellphones have been the big market for a number of years and they have used basic, commodity flash. That market seems to be saturated and what little profits there has been are drying up. Besides, there is a move to converge cellphones and PDAs. That will change the flash landscape before too much longer. Sandisk has a chance to capitalize on this with their MMCs, the biggest competition is Sony's memory sticks and they have typical Sony pricing...
