Did you ever see "The Ninth Configuration" from the Blatty novel, "Twinkle, Twinkle, Killer Kane".
Ninth Configuration
For the sake of argument, however, let it be assumed that organic compounds were formed by chance from inorganic matter. To get from this point to a form of life requires other chance events and additional assumptions. First, the matter produced would have to be of exactly the right kinds, in the proper proportions, in just the right places, and available at precisely the right times. Second, it must be assumed that such matter is capable of organizing itself into the structure of a cell and tends to do so. Third, ambient prerequisites for such organization - temperature, pressure, and any others - must be satisfied. Fourth, it must be assumed that life is merely the result of this organization. Fifth, the nutrients to sustain life would have to be available and of the type the cell could obtain and metabolize. Sixth, the cell would have to be able to reproduce itself to continue the chain of life. Seventh, the entire process would have to occur for both plant and animal life unless it be assumed that the first cell gave rise to both kingdoms. Eighth, if one or two cells were insufficient to guarantee survival, the process would have to occur repeatedly to produce a sufficient number. Ninth, after the chain got started, conditions changed and no more life arose from inanimate matter. |
