Jeff - have you ever considered the random walk theory? Professor flipped coins and his students made charts; then they gave the charts to stock market chartists and asked their opinions without telling them which stock was being charted. The chartists gave various opinions on tops, bottoms, head and shoulders, etc. Pretty convincing evidence that charts don't work.
