Actually a general contempt for Alf Landon (another "moderate" Republican) had a lot to do with it. But you are correct, the Social-Security-as-religious-cult generation screwed up their own political era, and continued to do so until their ranks were sufficiently thinned by time over the last 10-15 years. Their last obscenity was Palm Beach, 2000, but their waning influence showed through there. There is a lot of good that can be said about that generation (though it's been grossly overrated the last few years), but their legacy of political ignorance will be with us for quite a while more...
