Italy is in the midst of a bitter election campaign, and the arrests quickly entered the political debate, one reason the government highlighted the arrests so prominently. Mario Borghezio, a legislator from the Northern League, a right-wing party that is campaigning against illegal aliens, particularly from Muslim countries, seized on the arrests to sound an alarm.
``If the crisis in the Middle East worsens suddenly are we sure that the urban ghettos of the Muslim illegal aliens, now filled with mosques and religious centers, won't transform into so many nests of Arab terrorism?''
