I'm not completely sure of the facts, but either they rammed our plane deliberately, or (IMO more likely) they recklessly came to close to our plane and caused an accident. The fighter in this situation is pretty much under control. It has the speed, manuverability and (if it wants to use them) the weapons. The fighter could fly more then twice as fast as the E-P3. If we did have Chinese planes flying off our coast we probably wouldn't like it but we would not react in the same way. As long as they stay in international waters we would probably have fighters in the area, and maybe have them intercept the plane but if a collision did occur and the Chinese had to land in the US we would not keep them hostage.
