I don't know what the big deal is with 1.7 gig. Motherboard, cpus and .5gig memory 90gig disk, misc parts < 900 watman.com is 1.4 gig. dealdeal.com and in the motherboards you can find dual p3 motherboards going for less then 50 buck current bid. put 2, 1 gig p3 and your at 2 gig. I'd say up to about 500 bucks you can get 1.7 gig now. But if you load nt on these guys and have 2 gig of ram instead of 1 gig you will still have just slightly better than a 1996 pentium pro running linux. Now linux ain't quite up to snuff with irix. In that SGI understands how to put the whiz in bang in performance unix software, I'd guess they are quite good at getting better performance with their apps with msft OSes. But for example maya on a linux box will always outperform maya on NT. So one must maintain the check mark of msft compatibility, but the users, the smart users will gravitate to the more productive implementation over time. Engineering work stations are focused application engines and not generic PC's in functional use. Good engineers who can design are paid 100k plus and making them as productive as possible is very cost effective. tom watson tosiwmee
