What's interesting to me is that the same people who have supported self-determination and the rights of separation in such areas as Kosovo, Bosnia, Chechnya, Pakistan, etc., and who condemn the Chinese invasion of Tibet, are so willing to accept that Taiwan should have no right to self-determination.

Pakistan is an independent country. It also has had a break away region Bangladesh which has been an independent country since 1971.

If Kosovo, Bosnia (or some break away area in Bosnia) or Chechnya, become functional independent countries for over 50 years and at least at the end of that period are reasonably peaceful and stable democracies then I think they should not longer be considered break away provinces.
