AMD news on roadmap and future processors (Planet 3DNow!)

planet3dnow.de

They spoke with Jan Gütter, Geman's PR manager from AMD, and got the following information (I quote only the interesting things, for a full translation go to world.altavista.com):

Thunderbird

- will scale up to 1500 MHz, up to 1400 MHz with 100 MHz FSB
- currently 90% of all Athlons are made in Dresden, 100% in Q2
- Austin will be Duron only (plus Morgan which will be produced in Aluminium as well)
- current Socket A infrastructure is good for another 2-3 years

Palomino

- first desktop Palomino at 1533 MHz in Q3
- better branch-prediction and hardware-prefetching but no changes to pipeline, no SI-28 and no SSE(2)
- Palomino will be only offered with 133 MHz FSB
- will run on all current Socket A boards (with 133 MHz FSB support)

Hammer

- no complete new design but a redesign of the Athlon
- new infrastructure
- SSE2 support not 100% certain at this time, although AMD has an license for it
- first Clawhammers in first half of 2002

Overclocking

- AMD has plans for an effective overclocking lock
- problems with OEMs which sell lower rated Athlons at overclocked speeds

Keep in mind that these comments are from a PR manager ("there are lies, damned lies and PRs..."). When I spoke with him at CeBIT he wasn't too forthcoming; usually you get more information from the engineers.
