I like the quote from a Genentech scientist in a Reuters report on DNA's 25th anniversary: Currently, the biotech industry -- made up of some 1,500 companies in the United States -- has more than 350 new drug products and vaccines in human clinical trials. "I'm a little surprised there are so many companies. I chalk it up to the fact that most of them have never tried to make drug. If they did, they would know how frightfully difficult it is to pull it off," Lasky said.
