This is arbitrary, IMO. The dynamics of the Cold War were largely engineered by us. We knew that many of the missiles in Red Square were mock-ups. Clearly the Soviets knew it -- the only people that didn't were the Soviet people and the American people. We prop up totalitarian governments whenever we see fit, like the Shah of Iran or a couple of dozen other petty dictators.

China is already in a process of becoming more open. Talk to any Chinese national in this country and you will find this is true. There were a lot of hawks that didn't like Nixon making overtures to China. In retrospect, that was brilliant. We shouldn't be surprised when our spying efforts backfire (largely relics of the Cold War) and cause international incidents. Anyone remember when we violated Soviet airspace ALL THE TIME with U-2s and SR-71s? How soon we forget.

I don't support the Chinese occupation of Tibet. But then Mexico probably felt that way when Americans took Texas and California. It's a pretty weak argument that needs such a distraction from the facts at hand.

I'll reserve my judgement on who did what to whom until I see some authoritative data showing the plane's track and a disclosure of the mission intent. Someone has this and it's funny it isn't forthcoming.
