I should have done a search to see whether that had been posted already. Maybe, though, someone who missed your reference saw this one.

A question: I recently asked about a problem i was having defragging. Until a few defrags ago, I simply closed down the programs in my tool tray and used the Windows defrag you taught me to do ages ago (Start... Programs... Accessories... System Tools... Defrag....). But a new problem, the one I brought here, is that I keep getting the message that the drive content has changed so it's restarting.

This happened trying to defrag either the above way, or using Norton System Doctor. Since it happened, i haven't been able to use NSD to defrag.

You advised me to do Cntrl Alt Del and End Task on all the programs running except Explorer and one other. (That one started with Sys-, and I don't have it, though I do have something called Sysdoc32). Doing that, I have been able to defrag the regular Start... Programs.. etc way.

One question is, why did the need to shut down all those programs suddenly arise?

Probably it has something to do with the fact that at about that time I installed Windows ME, and began using not only the Netscape browser but MSIE, too. (And switched to Outlook for mail, from Netscape Communicator.)

God, this is getting complicated.

Anyway, the newest development is that even after I shut down allthe programs that show in the Close Program (Cntrl Alt Del) box, and everything in the tool tray, I get a message saying I can't optimize because the system is locked by a utility in use. Something like that.

But no utility is in use! NSD is shut down, everything except Explorer is shut down!

Before I call on Bombay or Calcutta... do you have any thoughts about this?

Also: What the hell ARE all those programs in the Close Program Box? Monwow? Poproxy? Robot? Csnsm32? and more. Do you suppose I really need all those?

Would it be a good idea for me to consult expertcity and go through them one by one, do you think?

I'm 4% fragmented right now. The red light will go on at 5%. Oh, the stress.
