It is possible that some of your sources are from what I call "paranoid 3DNOW camp" within AMD. They want to keep quiet about SSE/SSE2 to keep the ISVs from quitting the ongoing 3DNOW work. I guess I can understand to some degree. However, 3DNOW will be supported and it has its own set of advantages over SSE. So ISVs are free to choose either or both sets of extensions.
