It is one thing to be sensitive to context and to behave cautiously when dealing with other governments. It is another to pretend that we have no principles that matter, and that the oppression of others is a matter of utter indifference. Slavery is so far from indulging a personal eccentricity, like painting geese, that I cannot believe you would use the analogy seriously. We may as well say that a concern for liberty and the autonomy of the individual is a passing fancy, if we remain utterly indifferent to enslavement. Why should the autonomy of tyrants count more than the liberty of individuals?
