We had the same thing here in Northern Virginia. We moved here in 1988, and were renting because we just couldn't afford to buy. Everyone was telling us what a great investment real estate was. But back in New Orleans we had just gone through a real estate bust because of the oil bust. So I would tell people that housing prices can go down and they would laugh at me. Then came the bust, which took a long time to work out here.

The house we bought in 1999 sold for 10% more than it did in 1989. That's not a great investment.
